The salt spray test is an accelerated corrosion test used to measure the comparative corrosion resistance of materials exposed to a salt spray or salt fog at high temperature. This corrosion test is intended to provide corrosion resistance information on metals and coated metals. With visual inspection following this test the suitability of coatings and metals to resist corrosion or exposure to marine environments can be determined.

It is performed on the following types of finishes on ferrous products:

• Metallic coatings such as zinc, cadmium, copper, nickel and chromium.
• Non-metallic coating such as oxide/conversion coatings with/without supplemental organic coating.

Salt Spray Test to check the Corrosion has following standardized test methods:

• Neutral salt spray Tests uses chloride as the corrosive ion. The test is suitable for organic coatings, chromate conversion coatings, anodic oxide coatings on aluminium.
• AASS: Acidic acid salt spray test uses chloride and free acid as the corrosive ions. This test is useful for testing decorative coatings of copper + nickel + chromium or nickel + chromium and anodic coatings on aluminium.
• CASS: Copper accelerated Acetic Acid Salt Spray Test uses chloride, free acid and copper as the corrosive ions. This test is useful for testing decorative coatings of coper + nickel + chromium or nickel + chromium and anodic coatings on aluminium.
